2006 Symposium and Luncheon a Rousing Success

Fountain House’s third annual On Your Mind Symposium and Luncheon, Stressed Out: What You Need to Know About Anxiety Disorders, was held on May 1, 2006 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. There were 450 people in attendance, and the event raised a record $700,000 for Fountain House’s programs.

The distinguished expert panel, sponsored by Organon USA, included Dr. Eric Hollander of Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Una McCann of Johns Hopkins University, and Dr. Daniel Pine of the National Institute of Mental Health.

Fountain House was honored to present its 2006 Humanitarian Award to Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy from Rhode Island. Representative Kennedy brought the audience to its feet with an inspiring call to arms for the civil rights of individuals with mental illness.

Representative Kennedy’s achievements in Congress make him a leader in the field of mental health. He has sponsored legislation to improve mental health services at all stages of life and he leads the fight to pass mental health parity legislation to end discrimination in health insurance coverage.

More importantly, Kennedy has been courageous in his public discussion about his own struggles with mental illness and addiction. In doing so, he challenges the stigma surrounding mental illness and has gained the respect of many.

On Your Mind is an important forum for educating the public about misconceptions surrounding mental illness and for disseminating cutting-edge information on treatment and services.
