Fountain House, long a pioneer in social work practice, will sponsor two internship positions in the Fall of 2007. The positions will satisfy the field placement requirements towards a Master’s Degree in Social Work specializing in Advanced Generalist Social Practice. Students attending a practicum at Fountain House will be supervised by experienced, licensed social workers. Attached to each internship will be a $4,000 stipend per year.
Deadline for submissions is July 2, 2007. Acceptance notifications will be made by August 1, 2007.
No application will be reviewed until all documents are submitted.
Requirements:
Applicants must demonstrate through the application process how their intention to work at Fountain House is related to their career goals. In addition, we are looking for applicants who are in their second year of graduate studies and will be able to devote at least 900 hours over two semesters to their practicum.
Two letters of professional reference will be expected as well as a written statement of purpose. Successful applicants will be expected to submit the results of their field expertise for publication.
The Practicum Experience:
Fountain House supports the practicum as an integral step in the socialization of a social worker. As a service based profession, social work relies upon experience as well as schooling in the preparation of its workforce. In this context, we view the field experience as an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of the values, practices and skills of their profession, to apply applicable theories and test their validity, and to learn about personal strengths and abilities or areas in need of improvement. The immersion process at Fountain House should naturally awaken sensitivities, force self-reflection, and leave one with a renewed sense of one’s ability and direction. Suffice it to say that a practicum at Fountain House seeks to develop at a deeper and more varied level and to integrate in competent practice and leadership major components of the generalist perspective that includes:
· Grounding in the values of the profession
· Practice in the knowledge and skills to address both individual and complex, adaptive systems.
· Opportunities to address situations in working within a recognized social service agency such as program development, supervision of personnel, and advocacy.
· Applications in practice research and evaluation.
Additionally, Fountain House introduces students to a community that historically has played a key role in developing innovative field practices in employment, housing, and education, among others, as well as the very definition of the generalist practice.
