Maria Hernandez

Upon meeting Maria Hernandez, it is difficult to imagine she has endured even a day of hardship. Maria’s warmth, positive outlook, and love of life and humankind is evident in her every word and action. But Maria was no stranger to hardship before coming to Fountain House.

The untimely death of her brother in 1995 marked the beginning of a very dark period for Maria. In addition to coping with her grief, Maria fell ill and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Despite taking medication, without support, she was unable to keep her job. Soon after, she fled her native New York City to escape an abusive partner. She moved into in a shelter for battered women, where she first began to help herself through helping others, becoming a counselor at the shelter.

I have come a very, very long way and I owe it all to Fountain House. Everything you need is there for you to take advantage of. I especially look up to Kenn Dudek. He treats all members equally and supports us in every way that he can.

Two years later she returned to New York, but continued to struggle with mental illness. In 1997, a social worker suggested she join Fountain House but, suspicious that it was like so many unsuccessful treatment programs, Maria waited several months before checking it out.

Maria describes her first visit to Fountain House, “I was stunned. I received such a warm welcome. Right away I was offered opportunity and trust. I knew this was the place for me.”

Maria has immersed herself in Fountain House, and has made extraordinary strides in her own recovery. Since joining Fountain House, Maria has lived in her own apartment and has avoided hospitalization.

Maria has helped countless other members through her many contributions and generous heart. Maria speaks to new members at orientation and volunteers for the International Center for Clubhouse Development to help other Clubhouses obtain certification.

In addition to her five-day a week Transitional Employment position at Neuberger Berman, Maria works at the Fountain Gallery every week. While not an artist herself, she takes great pleasure in helping talented members fulfill their dreams. She has also revitalized the Fountain House Boutique, which distributes gently used business clothing for members preparing for job interviews or returning to work.

She explains her devotion to Fountain House - “I have come a very, very long way and I owe it all to Fountain House. Everything you need is there for you to take advantage of. I especially look up to Kenn Dudek. He treats all members equally and supports us in every way that he can.”

Fountain House is grateful to have Maria as part of its community. The Fountain House Board of Directors recognized her contributions, and elected her to a three-year term in 2002, which she sucessfully completed.
